3D Paper Unit - Pop Up Characters


 Description: For this you will cut slits into your folded construction paper, and then fold the piece of paper flap to make a 90 degree angle. That is what you glue your characters back to, to make it look like they are standing up. You will color and draw the background scene, and then draw and color your characters. Once colored and drawn, you will glue them to the paper flap. 

Extension Activity: Have the students write a short story about their characters, and background. The story should be at least 2 paragraphs long, with a beginning middle and end. This is obviously a Language Arts extension activity that gets students into story writing and using their imagination.

Footprint Introduction

  Description: This project works really great to get the students to introduce themselves at the start of year. Lay out some expectations with this project, such as using three or more different mediums, having your name clearly written, and being neat. This allows for students to show their own interests and personalities, while also engaging in art! Some examples of mediums and things I used were a Diet Coke box, a Polaroid, and a concert ticket. After students make their footprint you can have them each present!  Extension Activity:  A good extension activity for this could be the class taping their footprints to the wall in your classroom to make it look like they are all walking and moving forward together. This also could serve as some classroom decor that ties in your students and makes them feel welcome and included.

Dot Day

  Have each student create their own dot, you can use coffee filters like we did, or any kind of paper really, and give them full creativity to make it how they want. They can use whatever colors they want and put any kind of designs that represent stuff they like or things they find interesting. To connect it to some class material, they can then write a prompt about their dot creation and give details and explanations about what the dot represents and how they came to create what they did. This project allows for both art creativity, and also can connect to them working on their writing skills! The dots can be hung for decor in either the classroom or the hallway as well!
