3D Paper Unit - Pop Up Characters

Image
Description: For this you will cut slits into your folded construction paper, and then fold the piece of paper flap to make a 90 degree angle. That is what you glue your characters back to, to make it look like they are standing up. You will color and draw the background scene, and then draw and color your characters. Once colored and drawn, you will glue them to the paper flap.  Extension Activity: Have the students write a short story about their characters, and background. The story should be at least 2 paragraphs long, with a beginning middle and end. This is obviously a Language Arts extension activity that gets students into story writing and using their imagination.

Clay Mosaic Tile

Description: We are working with air dry clay in this project. You will give each kid a chunk of clay, teach them to get all of the air bubbles out by pressing firmly and folding continuously. After that, you roll out the clay, trace the square, and use your tool to shape the square. Once shaped in the square, you will use the excess clay to make your additive feature, I chose to make a "G" to put on as my additive. Make sure you score and slip the clay to make sure it stays in place. Also use your tool to make your subtractive design. After that, you can paint your clay tile however you would like, and then allow it to dry.  Extension Activity: Have the students write about their design choices, what their additive design was, and what they did for their subtractive design. This is a great way to tie in Language Arts and writing skills into their art project. It also can show off their personal interests.
